Housekeeper is based on a true story about one white family, the Rosenbergs, that hired a Philippina woman, Tina, who later, while under their employ, gave birth to two children of her own. Remarkably, Tina had a rare condition where the signs of pregnancy are unnoticeable – so without 9 months to prepare, it was an unexpected surprise when the babies landed in all their lives. Instead of firing her, the Rosenbergs took her in and helped Tina raise her children, much to the scrutiny of their friends and community who were not only in shock about how the babies “miraculously” arrived, but the very fact that they are “foreign”. The roles soon reversed as the Rosenbergs, an affluent white family started to take care of Tina and her children. Laced with the dark and humanistic humor only found in true-life stories, Housekeeper is a story about politics, class structures and stereotypes but most of all, it is a story filled with love and the message that there is nothing more powerful than the bond of family.
